Sworn Translation

Officially sworn translations for use before Italian courts and public administrations.

Sworn translation is required when Italian public bodies or courts require a document to be translated with full legal weight — by a translator registered with the Italian judicial system and bound by an oath of accuracy. The documents to which this applies are specific, and the distinction from certified translation is meaningful.

Our sworn translators are registered with Italian tribunals as CTU (Consulente Tecnico d’Ufficio) in their respective language pairs. The sworn translation includes a declaration of oath signed before a court official, which gives it legal force before Italian public administrations, courts, and registries.

Common documents requiring sworn translation include: birth, marriage, and death certificates for use in Italian public proceedings; foreign academic qualifications for recognition by Italian universities or professional bodies; foreign company incorporation documents for Italian commercial registry; foreign court orders for enforcement in Italy; and foreign driver’s licences for Italian conversion.

We advise on whether sworn or certified translation is required before beginning work. The distinction is important: submitting a certified translation where a sworn one is required will result in rejection by the authority. We have seen this cause significant delays and costs for clients who used a non-specialist agency.

Sworn translations are delivered in physical signed and sealed form. A digital copy is also provided. For documents that will also require apostille, we can advise on the procedure and coordinate with the relevant Italian authority.

In practice

A Brazilian family relocating to Brescia needed sworn Italian translations of their Brazilian birth certificates, marriage certificate, and university degrees for recognition by Italian public institutions. All submitted successfully with no issues raised by the anagrafe or the relevant university recognition body.
A UK company acquiring an Italian subsidiary needed sworn translations of UK company incorporation documents and director appointments for submission to the Italian commercial registry. Completed in four business days and accepted on first submission.

Common questions

Standard sworn translations take 3–5 business days. For standard certificate documents (birth, marriage, academic), we can often complete within 2 days. Express service is available.
For most sworn translations, a high-quality scan is sufficient for us to work from. Some Italian authorities require the original document to be presented alongside the sworn translation at submission. We advise case by case.
